Attentional Scaffolding: Reversing the Photo-taking Impairment Effect through Intentional Framing

Wed Jun 17, 11:45 AM–12:45 PM · ALP 1600

In our digital age, smartphones often act as "offloading machines" that trigger the Photo-taking Impairment Effect, where the act of recording an event actually erodes our memory of it. Drawing on a pilot project with 400 learners in Ukraine, I propose a new design principle called Intentional Visual Framing to transform photography from a passive act of "outsourcing" memory into a powerful Attentional Scaffold. By shifting from reactive clicking to deliberate visual construction, we can leverage the smartphone camera to force a transition from habitual to intentional cognitive control, ultimately using our devices not to replace our sight, but to help us learn to see better.
