#565: Examining Socio-Cognitive and Affective Dynamics of Team Functioning and Leadership in Medical Simulations

Wed Jun 17, 8:00 AM–9:30 AM · ALP 2500

Teamwork and leadership are critical in promoting team success and positive outcomes in high intensity contexts. Given the urgency during pediatric medical emergencies, it is crucial to understand what supports or impedes successful team dynamics, including cognitive, metacognitive, affective, motivational, and social (CAMMS) processes. Thus, this study explores the dynamics of first-, second-, and third-year medical residents’ (N = 21) CAMMS processes and their influence on individual and team performance in three team-based pediatric emergency simulated scenarios. Results indicate a significant correlation between motivation and cognitive and social processes, as well as a significant influence of team performance on CAMMS dynamics. Our findings support the need to further examine the impact of individual level processes on medical team functionality and performance. Using multimodal data, future studies will continue to explore relationships involving CAMMS dynamics and medical team functioning and performance.
