#965: An Exploration of Spatial Typologies for Active Learning: Classroom Configurations and Pedagogical Strategies

Wed Jun 17, 10:00 AM–11:30 AM · ALP 1110

Active learning classrooms are continuing to gain popularity worldwide, requiring educators to make effective use of these spatial environments. However, limited systematic frameworks exist to guide the alignment between instructional strategies and spatial configurations, leaving educators uncertain about how to configure and use space for pedagogical goals. This study introduces a typological approach based on Space Coupling Levels (SCL) combined with pattern visualization. Drawing on active learning strategies documented in educational practice, we assessed 50 strategies using the Space Coupling Levels approach, identifying 10 high-dependency cases. We selected five representative strategies for detailed pattern visualization, extracting and visualizing their characteristic spatial geometries and associated interaction patterns through conceptual pattern diagrams. This work establishes an alignment matrix of "activity types × spatial prerequisites" as a comparative baseline, offering researchers a replicable analytical tool while providing educators and space designers with visual design resources.
