ICLS Symposium | iY-10_CO-DESIGN | Co-design as Transformative Pedagogical Spaces: what zooming out teaches us about learning to co-design together

Thu Jun 18, 10:00 AM–11:30 AM · ALP 2300

This symposium brings together Learning Scientists and practitioners engaged in co-design practices embedded in diverse traditions (participatory design, human-centered design, youth participatory action research, design-based implementation research, and research practice partnerships) across diverse geographies. In different ways, these collections of papers challenge two artificially imposed constraints on how many co-design spaces are (a) designed, as short, condensed, irregular, or infrequent activities, and (b) studied, as analysis primarily focused on the interactions happening within the formal co-design activities themselves. By zooming out temporally and analytically, we make visible co-design processes that are deeply context-dependent, relational, political, and ethical practices, ones that researchers and participants construct and hone together over longer units of time. Through our collective discussions, we show how co-design spaces are unique spaces of being, doing, and becoming, for researchers and participants alike.
