CSCL Symposium | cY_GENAI-KB | Rise Above State-of-the-Art: Designing New Possibilities of GenAI for Knowledge Building

Thu Jun 18, 2:30 PM–4:00 PM · ALP 3600

This symposium presents cutting-edge research that explores how Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can be leveraged to enrich human-AI collaboration in CSCL for Knowledge Building (KB). It challenges prevailing educational paradigms of ‘learning from AI’ and instead it foregrounds collaborative creation, emphasizing how GenAI can be harnessed to enrich epistemic agency empowering learners in knowledge building. Building on four decades of KB research, this symposium aims to enrich both the conceptualization and design of human-AI collaboration for knowledge advancement. Seven interrelated contributions demonstrate emergent KB-AI design approaches, including dialogic approaches that engage learners in collaborative dialogue with AI, and integrated approaches that embed AI affordances into knowledge building environments. These designs span diverse contexts from doctoral interdisciplinary research to K-12 classrooms. Grounded in a design-based approach, this symposium positions these contributions as conceptual artifacts for design advancement and envisions new KB-AI synergies that enable emerging forms of CSCL and knowledge creation.
