#1345: Mathematizing, Visualizing, and Power: A Collection of Community-Centered Data-Art by Appalachian Youth
This collage poster shares photographs and artist statements of artistic data visualizations created by East Tennessean youth in Mathematizing, Visualizing, and Power (MVP): Appalachian Youth Becoming Data Artists for Community Learning, a multi-year NSF-funded project. Across five sites over three years, approximately 150 Appalachian youth participated in this project to connect data science, art, and community life. They were invited to ask questions that mattered to their communities, collect and analyze data from their communities, and transform what they found into artistic data visualizations. The featured data-art works in this poster spotlight how youth used data to tell stories about community issues they care about and to communicate those stories in creative, personal ways. By bringing together data investigation and artistic expression, this project created a meaningful and community-centered pathway for youth to engage with both data science and the arts.
