#1363: Unlearning

Thu Jun 18, 2:30 PM–4:00 PM · ALP Patio

Unlearning is an interactive gallery that provocatively introduces and explores (un)learning as an active, political, communal process through collaborative collage-making. It invites the visitors to engage with 18 original collages, each exploring personal moments and journeys when default settings, rituals, practices, or learnings suddenly felt odd. It utilizes the dance of collaging between constructing and deconstructing to process another one between learning, unlearning, and relearning. What, then, must be (un)learned? Our individual and collaborative pieces reveal how learning often means naturalizing harmful categories and systems, beliefs that become so deeply sedimented they feel like common sense. We learned that nationality is fixed, safety comes from carceral institutions, creativity is innate talent, voice must hide subjectivity, care should be withheld, bodies must be controlled. These weren't abstract concepts but embodied, ritualized performances that shaped who we understood ourselves to be and what possibilities we could imagine.
