#1381: Learning Black-GPT: Demonstrating the Creative Workflows of Black Artists Using Generative AI Tools

Thu Jun 18, 4:15 PM–5:45 PM · ALP 1600

This demonstration presents an investigation of the creative workflows Black artists use when producing multimodal art with generative AI systems. Through screen-captured think-aloud protocols with three artists, we highlight routines that reveal culturally grounded practices rooted in hip-hop, Black Arts Movement, and broader African-American artistic lineages. The project argues for pluralistic AI design—an approach that recognizes multiple cultural repertoires and aesthetic traditions as foundational to AI system development and use. The session features edited workflow recordings and a live audience-guided demo that together illustrate how Black cultural knowledge, sociotechnical workflows, and ethical considerations shape AI-supported creative production and offer valuable insights for AI literacy learning environments that are culturally sustaining.
