#267: Camp Cyber: Developing Girls’ Interest and Self-Efficacy in Cybersecurity using Generative AI

Thu Jun 18, 4:15 PM–5:45 PM · Outdoors

This mixed-methods study examines how a week-long residential cybersecurity camp integrating generative AI (GenAI) tools influenced underrepresented minority girls’ cybersecurity knowledge, self-efficacy, and interest. Thirty-three middle-grade participants engaged in cybersecurity lessons and created GenAI informational videos for local nonprofits using ChatGPT and HeyGen AI. Pre- and post-tests revealed significant gains in knowledge and self-efficacy. Qualitative analysis showed growing confidence and real-world application. Findings suggest GenAI-integrated informal education builds technical knowledge and confidence among underrepresented youth.
