#669: How Middle School Students Engage in Computational Literacies in an Agricultural Class
Integration of computing in K-12 education has grown with the advent of computational tools in daily life. Computing education researchers now call for understanding of computing as a literacy which is not well understood, especially in the context of non-CS classrooms like agriculture. This study presents insights from integrating computing in a middle school agricultural classroom. The students developed and implemented an experiment using computational tools to investigate the effects of environmental factors on plant health. A comparison and contrasting engagement with computational literacies of two student teams is presented. The paper illustrates computing driven collaboration, tool-centered interactions, and new forms of computing driven engagement through the lens of computational literacies.
