#1001: Are We There Yet? The Roles and Development of GenAI-Based Tools Supporting Collaborative Learning: A Scoping Review
Tools based on generative AI (genAI), interacting with learners in a human-like manner, such as conversational agents and ChatGPT, offer potential to develop adaptive support for collaborative learning. Following PRISMA guidelines, after screening results of searching three databases, our scoping review identified 239 relevant records reporting about genAI tools in CSCL including 138 empirical articles this paper focuses on. They were analyzed in depth regarding genAI tool’s maturity level of implementation in collaborative learning, and the role genAI takes within. Results show studies at different levels of maturity in implementation of the genAI tool ranging from designing the tool or investigating its usability to studies focusing on human learning outcomes. GenAI takes multiple roles simultaneously, mostly providing epistemic and metacognitive scaffolding to individuals or groups. Our results indicate substantial development in the growing number of empirical articles, while pointing out gaps in specific support type provision, especially for school learners.
