#1067: Speculative Learning Through Conference Participation: On the Affordances of Rogue Poster Sessions

Wed Jun 17, 10:00 AM–11:30 AM · ALP 1700

While some education researchers have begun to explore the learning that happens at academic conferences, this work largely examines the praxes of sanctioned participation (e.g., presentations, organizing, networking). In response, we use this paper to explore the learning that occurred during “rogue” poster sessions that the authors conducted at the 2025 ISLS annual meeting focused on a poster conceptualizing learning at the conference itself. Analyzing video recordings of four rogue poster presentations, we iterate a model of speculative and participatory learning that builds from the content of the poster to reimagine the borders of the learning sciences and the conference itself. Beyond our analysis of learning within (familiar) poster presentations, we propose the embrace of unsanctioned conference participation as a means to amplify marginalized voices and ways of knowing in the field while also acknowledging the inherent barriers that come with challenging social norms in this way.
