#259: Epistemic Practices, Emotion, and Belonging in a Right-Wing Education Podcast

Thu Jun 18, 8:00 AM–9:30 AM · ALP 2600

Political contestation about epistemic worlds is consequential for curriculum and the dignity of youth and educators. We analyze one venue where a right-wing epistemic world about US education is constructed, “The Joyful Warriors Podcast” YouTube podcast by Moms for Liberty. We use discourse and interaction analysis of one episode to understand how epistemic practices, emotion, and ideology combine to produce a view of the world in which medical and education experts are corrupt enemies, children are at-risk from “gender ideology,” and “commonsense” mothers are defenders of their children and the nation. The study has implications for learning sciences research on epistemic engagement and LGBTQ+ learners.
