#1015: Collaboration Quality in Computational Modeling: Implications for Middle-School STEM+C Learning

Thu Jun 18, 10:00 AM–11:30 AM · ALP 2200

Collaboration is recognized by NGSS as an important 21st-century skill, yet its role in middle-school STEM+C remains underexplored. This study examines how students collaborate while building computational models (CM) of scientific processes and how it relates to learning outcomes. We coded 16 hours of activity from eight dyads across Meier et al.’s nine collaboration dimensions (e.g., mutual understanding, dialogue management, information pooling) and analyzed links between collaboration quality, model performance, and assessment scores. Findings highlight the dynamics of CM collaboration and the need for scaffolds that promote productive interaction and teach collaboration as a transferable skill.
