#789: Rehearsing and Reflecting on Questioning Practices: Science Pre-service Teacher Engagement with an AI-based Classroom Simulator
Engaging learners in science involves equitable participation in rich scientific discourse. However, leading scientific discussions can be difficult for teachers to orchestrate and for pre-service teachers (PSTs) to rehearse and learn. Artificial intelligence-based simulations offer opportunities for teachers to rehearse science teaching practices and receive automated feedback on performance. However, very few tools have been used with science methods courses. This pilot study investigates the use of an AI-based classroom simulator that provides feedback to PSTs on the types of questions asked during a simulated conversation. Results demonstrate that the PSTs were able to use the tool to practice science talk moves and reflect upon their performance with automated feedback. Findings highlight the potential of the tool to be used in science methods courses to support pre-service teachers’ rehearsal of leading productive science talk.
