#17: Can GenAI Assess My Data? Teachers’ Perspectives on Using GenAI Tools for Dataset Evaluation
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can be used for various data-related tasks; however, teachers often lack guidance or knowledge of what those tasks are and what their limitations are. To begin understanding how teachers perceive GenAI's role in data science, we examined teachers’ evaluations of datasets with and without GenAI. Seven teachers assessed self-selected datasets across five dimensions using the 5Vs for K-12 framework during a professional development session. They used a GenAI tool to evaluate the same datasets and reflected on their experiences. Responses were analyzed through deductive and inductive thematic analysis, highlighting differences between the evaluations and teachers’ perspectives on student use of GenAI. Overall, GenAI responses were more detailed than those of teachers. However, the GenAI responses also exhibited some gaps, particularly in terms of veracity. Teachers’ acceptance and trust in GenAI responses varied and were mostly conditional.
