#522: Embedding Epistemological Pluralism in Explorers of Planet Ioio: A Roleplay-Based Data Science Curriculum
We explore how undergraduates may engage with multiple epistemological values related to data science in Explorers of Planet Ioio, a pilot, roleplay-based data science curriculum designed to support epistemological pluralism: awareness of multiple, valid ways to construct knowledge with data. Much existing data science education emphasizes singular sets of epistemological approaches to data inquiry, contrasting how data scientists approach problems from different epistemological perspectives. We present findings from a design-based research case study to describe processes in Explorers of Planet Ioio that preceded awareness of epistemological pluralism. We theorize which kinds of processes allowed the learners to better understand foundations of epistemological pluralism in the Explorers of Planet Ioio context. We also share how we interweave epistemological reflection within our data science curricular materials.
