#902: Exploring Multidimensional Thinking in a Community of Philosophical Inquiry for AI Ethics Education

Thu Jun 18, 2:30 PM–4:00 PM · ALP 2300

This study developed a digital tabletop role-playing game (TRPG), The Gray Area, for AI ethics education and analyzed the patterns of players’ multidimensional thinking. Based on the Community of Philosophical Inquiry (CPI), the game utilizes the topic of sex robots to promote multidimensional thinking by providing inquiry questions that explore ethical issues. The analysis of in-game dialogues of 20 university students showed that players used creative and caring thinking to support their critical reasoning. Specifically, they engaged in creative thinking by imagining the advantages and problems of AI, and caring thinking by considering the perspectives of various stakeholders. Furthermore, post-game surveys and interviews revealed high player engagement and perceived educational value. Overall, this study demonstrates the roles of creative and caring thinking in the process of critical judgment on AI ethical issues and highlights the potential of The Gray Area as a pedagogical method for AI ethics education.
