This study examines how Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can enhance learning design (LD) by exploring stakeholders’ preferences for five conceptual GenAI-based conversational agent functions—Authoring Assistant, Inspiration Hub, Design Feedback, Possibility Engine, and Ethics Guardian—adapted from the GenAI Speculative Functions Framework for LD. Proposed for the TRAILS teacher professional development platform, these functions target underexplored early phases of LD. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, 56 participants evaluated these functions, their support needs across design phases, and related opportunities and concerns. Findings reveal a two-pillar demand: creative inspiration, prioritized in the Investigation phase through the Inspiration Hub, and drafting efficiency, prioritized in the Authoring phase through the Authoring Assistant. The analysis revealed role-dependent value: experienced practitioners favored generative and creativity-oriented functions, while prospective teachers emphasized diagnostic and feedback support. The Ethics Guardian emerged as an essential ambient safeguard. The study offers practical guidance for integrating human-centered GenAI into teacher professional development platforms and human-AI collaboration in LD.
