#559: Stories of Practice as a Means to promote Teachers' Professional Learning: The Role of AI-Based Chatbots

Fri Jun 19, 8:00 AM–9:30 AM · ALP 1700

This study investigates how AI conversational chatbots can support teachers’ professional learning through writing reflective stories of practice within networks of research–practice partnerships (RPPs). We developed “Tell Me Your Story”—a chatbot designed to guide teachers in recounting meaningful classroom experiences and generate structured narratives. Grounded in a framework that conceptualizes identities as story-based, and learning as identity development, the study examined how such interactions help teachers articulate identity stories and promote their professional learning. Ten teachers who integrated citizen science initiatives in their teaching engaged in chatbot-assisted storytelling followed by a meta-reflective interview. The resulting narratives met the criteria of identity stories, with most participants developing new or reinforced insights interpreted as professional identity development. These findings suggest that chatbot-supported storytelling can generate knowledge artifacts that may facilitate collective learning across networks of RPPs.
