Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) chatbots are often uncritical, sycophantic, and can lead to offloading critical thinking (CT). This risks the atrophy of CT skills by removing the practice necessary to maintain them. I argue for using GenAI as a CT partner to encourage a user's CT abilities. Here, I present a framework for creating such a partner through system prompting and conceptually demonstrate how this can be done.
