US-based special education teachers use Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to tailor academic resources for students with disabilities. However, prior interviews reveal significant challenges integrating key IEP components – individualized learning goals, accommodations, and progress monitoring – into existing AI-based tutoring and assessment technologies. This paper discusses AI-based tutoring systems’ misaligned analytics with teachers’ needs, the level of decision-making AI should have in special education classrooms, and a pathway for adapting AI-based tutoring systems to special education’s needs.
