Given the rapidly changing environmental conditions affecting communities globally, environmental education must be integrated into K-12 schooling. Through partnerships with local environmental scientists, we developed elementary mathematics tasks that engage students in authentic sensemaking related to environmental issues. We use a multiple case study design to consider pre-service teachers' perceptions of the tasks and propose design conjectures that can inform the design of tasks that are perceived as beneficial and usable.
