This study unpacks the author’s experience leading a high school varsity basketball program through both a successful and an unsuccessful season. Framed by Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory and drawing on coaching reflections and artifacts, this piece argues that Côté’s Transformational Coaching Framework can be improved by attending to the power of the coaching environment, which acts as a prerequisite to transformation. Before achieving transformational leadership, out-of-school-time leaders must first cultivate an ecosystem grounded in shared goals, values, and support. Learning scientists are thus encouraged to view leadership in educational settings as ecological by nature.
