Social metacognition, or the extent that group members working together are aware of and regulate the thinking of other group members, is associated with greater cognition and learning. However, it remains unclear to what extent undergraduate students engage in planning, monitoring, and evaluating their group’s learning in the context of biology labs. Here, we investigate to what extent groups engage in social metacognition through their peer-to-peer questions and characterize different types of questions during groupwork.
