#331: “A Beautiful Little Thing for You”: Emergent Data Visualizations as Contextually Responsive Invitations to Data Reasoning

Though familiar to experts, the use of exclusively canonical data visualizations may foreclose reasoning opportunities consistent with everyday experience. We share an episode of teachers creating a display with materials from their surroundings. In debating this display’s status as a data visualization, teachers reflected on their criteria for data visualizations and on mediators to their learners’ engagement with data and science. We highlight emergent data visualizations as potential resources for contextually responsive reasoning with data.
