Higher Education & Undergraduate Learning Design-Based Research Self-Regulated & Socially Shared Regulation
This design-based study examined a graduate research-methods course for 14 doctoral students, grounded in cognitive constructivism, situated learning, and cognitive load theory. Using backward design and cumulative assignments, the course scaffolded proposal writing in professional contexts. Coded reflections and semantic network analysis showed that students valued structure and iterative feedback but struggled with alignment, template confusion, and workload. Two revisions are proposed: a weekly visual “you-are-here” organizer and consolidated cloud-based templates to reduce extraneous load and strengthen workplace transfer.
